As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Glasgow Science Festival this June, the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) hosted "UWS SparkFest: Fun Science for Everyone" at its Lanarkshire Campus. Free and open to all, the event welcomed families and members of the public, bringing the science of the laboratory into everyday life for an afternoon.

All Schools, One Stage
SparkFest was jointly hosted by UWS's School of Health and Life Sciences and School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences, spanning forensics, zoology, health, sport, engineering, and biomedical science. There were no exhibits behind glass — only hands-on experience. Visitors could meet living animals, watch wave-tank demonstrations of coastal and structural impacts, learn CPR, make DNA bead bracelets, and explore cutting-edge sports science in the extreme environments laboratory. Children were captivated; parents were equally absorbed.

The Corner Everyone Wanted to See
The DCIC booth drew some of the biggest crowds of the day. A robot dog navigated the floor with fluid precision, drone demonstrations drew audible gasps, and a queue formed steadily at the VR headsets — technologies from the frontier of communications and engineering, made immediately tangible for children and parents alike. Many parents who stopped to learn about the research behind these exhibits showed a genuine fascination with wireless communications, smart devices, and digital connectivity. For students at Scotland Academy in communications engineering, computing, and engineering management, these are the very topics at the cutting edge of your field — and the people doing the demonstrating were UWS researchers and students.

Another Side of a University
The staff and students at the booths — patiently demonstrating, fielding questions, lighting up when a child understood something for the first time — came from different countries and different backgrounds, and found their way to the same campus. For students at Scotland Academy, that path is not unfamiliar: the partnership programme between Scotland Academy and UWS is a bridge that has already been built. The Lanarkshire Campus, the DCIC laboratories, the booth at the Glasgow Science Festival — none of this is someone else's story. That spot at the SparkFest exhibition: next time, it could be yours.
